Player Decisions During a Blackjack Game

A player of blackjack has a number of decisions to make while the game is going on. These decisions include Surrender, Hitting, Standing, Doubling Down, Splitting Pairs, and Insurance.

1. Surrender - This is the least common decision a player would make in a game. The decision to surrender will be usually made before playing your hand. Not all casinos offer the choice to surrender and for those that do, it is categorized as early surrender or late surrender.

2. Hitting - One of the most common decisions that you will make during a game. You make a hit when you want to draw another card.

3. Standing - Another common decision that you will have to make during the game. You make a stand when you decide to stop at the current total of your hand and don't want to draw another card.

4. Doubling Down - This is a very profitable decision for a player. Doubling down can only happen when you have a two card hand and you haven't yet added another card. You double your wager but you will have to receive only one additional card to your hand. Doubling down is a good decision to make when you have the advantage.

5. Splitting Pairs - This is done when you are dealt with two cards of the same value. Splitting pairs will give you the opportunity to separate your hand into two independent hands and make decisions for both in one round.

It is important to note that when you are dealt with a pair of ten-value cards, do not split the pair because it will be a bad play for you. Keep the 20 value of hand because it is a particularly strong hand. For a pair of Aces, a good tip is to always split this pair.

6. Insurance - This decision is the least understood of all the available rules for the game. Insurance is actually a side-bet that offers you 2:1 odds in instances that dealers have 21. That is why it is called insurance because it protects your original bet from the 21 of the dealer's hand.

For beginners to the game, it is advisable to never take the side-bet for insurance. Unless you know for sure that the hand is in your favor, just ignore the insurance bet.

You'll encounter these decisions in a blackjack game. A player must know what is the right decision to make in a certain situation that the game may end up in more winnings and less losses.
